Lifeguard Course Description
American Red Cross Lifeguard program includes comprehensive training in water rescues, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and first aid skills. The course incorporates a blended learning format with online training sessions, classroom skills and water rescue activities. Participants will learn to recognize and respond effectively to emergencies, as well as how to prevent drowning and injuries. Lifeguard Training Fact Sheet
Lifeguard Training participants must be at least 15 years old, able to swim 300 yards (12 lengths of a 25 yard pool) without stopping using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes using legs only, and retrieve a 10-lb brick from 7 feet deep and swim 20 yards with the weight, using legs only and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute 40 seconds. Lifeguard Certification classes for 2013
Each class number is a complete course, you only need to attend one weekend (Sat & Sun) to get certified.

Steps to Successful Lifeguard Certification
- Click Register Online under the class number that you would like to take and complete the online registration
- Print the Class Documents required for training
- Access the free digital Lifeguard Manual
- Complete the Online Training Sessions thru the American Red Cross Learning Center
- Attend all class dates and times you are signed up for, and pass the lifeguard swim test on the first class date
- Participate and demonstrate competency in all required skills, and correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam
- Print your Lifeguard certification online thru the American Red Cross Learning Center
At least one (1) day prior to the class dates participants must complete online training sessions thru the American Red Cross Learning Center. The Red Cross charges $28 for the online session which is in addition to the training fees charged by Safe Swim. Steps to complete Online Training Sessions
You can download a free digital version of the Red Cross Lifeguard Manual text to study for training. Please Note: You are not required to purchase or print the manual.
What to Bring to Class
Lifeguard Training Forms; Bathing suit and towel; a pen or pencil and paper for notes; and a CPR pocket mask or participants may purchase a mask during the class for $15.
Printing your Lifeguard Certification
Approximately 5 business days after you have successfully completed all the course requirements your Lifeguard certification will be available for print through the American Red Cross Learning Center. Steps to print your Lifeguard Certification
VISITORS - Only registered participants are allowed on the pool deck or in the class rooms during training. All visitors including parents must wait in the parking lot.
REFUNDS - No refunds will be issued once course fees have been submitted. In the event that a participant is unable to pass the prerequisites or final exams the participant may transfer to a class at a later date (if available) for a transfer fee of $35. If a participant is absent from any scheduled class days or times, the participant will not be offered a transfer or refund of any kind.
TRANSFERS - The class transfer fee is $35 and registered participants are required to notify Safe Swim at least 48 hours prior to the first class date that you are currently registered for in order to be eligible to transfer.
